Learning Targets

CONTRAST

is the difference in brightness between the shadows and the highlights of an image. Understanding contrast and learning how to achieve different contrast effects will give you a greater scope for creating photos that leave a strong visual impression.

LEARNING TARGETS

  • Discover what contrast is and how it affects your photos
  • Understand how lighting affects contrast
  • Learn what the dynamic range of your camera is
  • Apply your new knowledge and shoot several HDR photos
  • Experiment with high-and low-contrast light
  • Review your understanding of contrast and take a quiz

ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • For your performance of understanding (how you show me that you know what you are doing) you are being asked to capture 3 HDR images. 

 SHOOTING REQUIREMENTS & TIPS

  • WHITE cameras only-black cameras do not have a HDR setting.
  • Go to MODE” –“SMART”“RICH TONE”-On a DSLR camera or a smartphone you would simply choose HDR setting
  • For this lab you will need a tripod, you will also need to shoot outdoors.
  • Make sure that the image that you compose in your viewfinder has a full range of tones.
  • Set Your White Balance to AWB-All photos must have the correct white balance or they will be rejected!
  • Choose the appropriate meter setting, Evaluative/Center Weighted/Spot.
  • You will be unable to set your exposure in this mode.
  • Set your timer!
  • Check your Histogram! It should look like the example shown below
