LAB-Conveying Movement (11)

MOVEMENT

Movement in photographs can help emphasize the energy or emotions of your subject. Movement can also be frozen to convey drama and power, or blurred to demonstrate speed.

LEARNING TARGETS FREEZE MOTION

  • understand the theories behind capturing and creatively controlling movement (Notes-in class work 25 points in IC)
  • adjust shutter speed on the camera using the shutter priority mode (TV). However,if you cannot get the desired result you might have to shoot in manual mode)
  • learn how to use the flash to freeze motion
  • assess what decisions need to be made about shutter speed that will best convey the type of movement you want to show
  • demonstrate stopped motion in an image
  • critically analyze images for errors in exposure and make the necessary corrections and re-shoot if necessary
  • test your knowledge by taking a quiz
  • create a blog post to show your work

LEARNING TARGETS BLUR MOTION

  • understand the theories behind capturing and creatively controlling movement (Notes-in class work 25 points in IC)
  • adjust shutter speed on the camera using the shutter priority mode (TV). However,if you cannot get the desired result you might have to shoot in manual mode)
  • understand how to use/adjust a tripod to control camera shake
  • understand how to adjust the camera timer to control camera shake
  • demonstrate blurred motion in an image
  • critically analyze images for errors in exposure and make the necessary corrections and re-shoot if necessary
  • test your knowledge by taking a quiz
  • create a blog post to show your work

LEARNING TARGETS PAN MOTION

  • understand the theories behind capturing and creatively controlling movement (Notes-in class work 25 points in IC)
  • adjust shutter speed on the camera using the shutter priority mode (TV). However,if you cannot get the desired result you might have to shoot in manual mode)
  • learn how to pan the camera
  • set shutter speed to 1/60
  • critically analyze images for errors in exposure and make the necessary corrections and re-shoot if necessary
  • use the above criteria to select your best images and upload to them to the blog for evaluation
  • test your knowledge by taking a quiz
  • create a blog post to show your work

ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • The LAB is your performance of understanding. This is how you show me that you are learning.  You are being asked to demonstrate your understanding of how to manipulate time by changing the amount of time the shutter is open.
  • Your task is to capture six images: two that demonstrates BLURRED motion, two that demonstrates STOP-MOTION and also two PANNING SHOTS.
  • 6 images total
  • You and your partner(s) should have distinctly different images.

SHOOTING REQUIREMENTS & TIPS

  • Shoot in SHUTTER PRIORITY or MANUAL mode
  • Use the FLASH for freezing motion.
  • Use a TRIPOD for blurring motion.
  • Use and set the timer to limit camera shake.
  • Use your prior knowledge of MANUAL FOCUS from the Using Depth of Field lab.

SHOOTING REQUIREMENTS & TIPS (PANNING)

Where to start:

Your will need a willing subject who doesn’t mind running in front of you a few times. Find a location with room to move around with good light and a background that is not just empty space.

BLOG POST REQUIREMENTS

Once you have captured your four images that both show the stop motion, blurred motion, and creative use, you will create a your blog post.

The blog post will be named CONVEYING MOVEMENT.

Identify each photo with the depth of field information,  ISO and shutter speed.
